Physical IT Equipment Policies
Do I need approval to add networking equipment to my office? Why can my network device not connect to the internet? Why is my device blocked on the TechTown network?

This article only applies to Private Office members. Dedicated Desk Members are not permitted to install permanent network devices such as those listed below. Devices like these must be contained in a Private Office space.
TechTown has a robust networking infrastructure to ensure the safety and well-being of our colleagues and members. As a result, we adopt a zero-trust methodology for any foreign network devices that are not personal computers, phones, or simple smart devices (such as watches). This means that any foreign devices that are not personal will be blocked and rejected from our network automatically.
Our Private Office members are entirely welcome to install their hardware in their space, but all devices connected to our network need to be reviewed and approved by our Building IT & Infrastructure Team. Devices that require approval include, but are not limited to:
- Network Switches
- Firewalls
- Routers
- ISP Equipment
- Physical On-Prem Servers
- NAS Devices (or other Network Storage Solutions)
- Printers/Copiers
- Surveillance Cameras or Systems
- Specialized Digital Equipment (Such as Network Connected Scientific Instruments, Diagnostic Machines, etc)
